Dhaka Live’s Jessica Mudditt recently visited the bustling city of Kolkata. With a population of almost 16 million people, it is slightly larger than Dhaka. These pictures depict its inhabitants going about their daily lives: for some it is tougher than others.
As well as it being our honeymoon, this was Sherpa’s first trip to India and I wanted him to have the best experience possible. I’d seen at least 30 hotels and had a “shortlist” of about eight business cards, but none made me smile.
We made a bee-line for the Matrimandir’s viewing area and drank in its golden golf ball-ness from a postcard perfect distance.
I made up my mind then and there: I would get inside that golden ball by becoming a faux Aurovillian.

Those were the last words I heard from my travel companion before leaving him in a dingy hotel room for the next 14 hours. I was about to spend the day as an extra in a Bollywood film.
